I’m heading North from Riga to Tallinn and bringing along my bike hoping to find some good riding. It’s a 4 hour drive; forests, some fields, more forests, one lane each way and a lot of speed cameras. But if you stop… It’s just amazing. Hundreds of kilometers of empty beaches just sitting there.
The evenings are starting to get shorter, but I’ve quickly managed to find some trails on Strava’s heatmap just south of the ring road. To start with it’s just so nice to get out of the office and suck in that clean air – or is it? I’ll come back on that…
Saku Rabamesta… Saku is a town. It’s also a beer 😊. Rabametsa means Bog forest. The trail is just an endless single track, but absolutely NO technical challenges and absolutely NO hills. No choice of lines. Just following an endless single track. It strikes me that I’ve never experienced this before… Boring MTB trails actually exist (!). I just follow the flat trail hoping to soon be back at the parking. Well to be fair. There are some few small features where you can’t just sit back completely.
On top of getting bored I feel weak. No power in my legs. Heavy breathing. I just keep going to get back. But ok… On picture it actually looks very nice:
Then I come across this sign and wonder if the air really is clean. The sign is old – probably from occupation time. But still….? And the name of the trail that I’ve been following is Saku Bog Forest Health trail……
Bored but also totally exhausted I return to the car and get back to the hotel. For sure this nice view makes things better, but I realize that the loss of power is probably because I’m about to get sick. And yes. I found out a week or two later that it was Covid…
